In The Savages of America (1959) Roy Harvey Pearce wrote:
The practical problem of bringing savages to civilization [domination] was to be solved by bringing them to the Christianity which was at its heart. Success in empire-building [domination-building] and trade was to be measured by success in civilizing [dominating] and Christianizing; success in civilizing [dominating] and Christianizing would assure success in empire-building and trade. Meantime, the Indian, in his savage nature, stood everywhere as a challenge to order and reason and civilization [the prevailing system of domination].”
